Bear Whittling Chip - Adults please bring knife for your scout to use

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Bear parents,

Instruction to earn the Whittling Chip continues in our next meeting.
The bears will practice carving soap with an actual knife.
Please bring an appropriate pocket knife with you to the meeting for your scout to use in the meeting (an adult needs to bring the knife - not the scout).
I can also provide an extra knife to use if you let me know.
Contact me if you have questions and I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

Bears - Whittling Chip starts this Tuesday

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Bear parents,

FYI. We are going to start earning the whittling chip this week. The Whittling Chip gives the scout permission to carry a knife. All knife use MUST be closely monitored by an adult at Scout functions and I strongly encourage you to maintain the same standard at home. This week will be knife safety with maybe a little soap carving with plastic knives. I will provide all materials for this topic - DO NOT SEND KNIVES WITH THE BOYS.

Den Meeting Tonight! - New Scouts, Webelos, Yorktown, and Popcorn

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Hey everyone,

We do have a regular den meeting tomorrow. I had a call from a family that has a Tiger and a Bear that will be coming to visit. They just moved to the area from France and the boys (and parents) are still learning to speak English (the mom, Claire, speaks English pretty well, I talked to her on the phone). So, be on the lookout for them and please make them feel Welcome.

The Webelos II boys will not be meeting at the building tomorrow night as we will be going to the Fire Station to work on our Readyman pin, so we won’t see you there. That means that I need a den leader to volunteer to run the opening activity (Flag ceremony, etiquette or maybe a surprise uniform inspection - but nothing too harsh). Please email me to let me know you can organize this.

Also, we have to get the final registration for the Yorktown trip and we need the payments made (I’ve got to get mine to Bobbi following tomorrow night), so if a parent can let me know that they will be able to step over to the Boy Scout meeting to get the envelop with the registration form from my son and can make sure all of the den’s get a chance to get registered, that would be great. We are at 38 with the Flack family if all of them go and I haven’t gotten them on the form yet. We have slots for 50. Remember that it is $76 per scout and the same for each adult ($152 per pair) and make your checks out to Pack 393 so that we can get it deposited before I have to cut a check from our account to make the final payment. As discussed, if your son sells $260 in popcorn (several got close with the show and sells the weekend before last), then the Pack will reimburse you for the scout admission for this trip once the popcorn sale is complete.

And that brings me to the Popcorn update. I hope all of the boys are having a good time selling and that they have gotten to go out in their neighborhoods. We basically have 2 more weeks from tomorrow to complete our sale.

All orders and money have to be turned in at our meeting on October 25.

As we said at the sale kickoff, you have to have the money for each order or the parent will need to write a check to cover the cost of the order or the order won’t get made. Hopefully you have been collecting the money in advance as you went out to sell. We also ask that the parent write a check for any cash that your have received (in other words, deposit the cash and write a check for the cash amount to turn in with your order on the final night). We will need some parent volunteers to help with each den collection on the 25th and to make sure the orders are correct and the money is correct, but it would be better for us not to have to handle any cash and writing a check for the cash amount is the best way to ensure this. Thanks for your help with this and continued good luck with your sale.

Sincerely,

Randy Basinger

Covering Readyman requirements

Webelos II

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

We are rapidly approaching the end of our time together. We will be having our bridging ceremony after the pinewood derby on February 19th. This is their final day in the pack. It is recommended that each scout visit 2-3 troops to see which one they prefer. You can contact the scout office to get a list of troops in the area with their dates and times. Googling troops in Cary/Morrisville should produce some as well. Troop 393 meets at the church on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30pm. Ryan will be joining Troop 212 at St. Michael’s church with his big brother. They meet Wednesday’s from 7:30-9:00pm.
Derby/Bridging Tentative schedule:

10:00 Webelos race followed by all the rest of the dens
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Ceremony

To help make the day special for the boys, the pack will be purchasing several hams and each den will be assigned a specific food category to bring. (ie.sides, desserts, etc.) The official ceremony will occur after the races have been completed. In preparation for the bridging/arrow of light ceremony we will need all parents to help with a specific job. We will need to help set up on Friday, Feb. 18th and coordinate the food on the 19th. I will be sending out an email with den specific food a bit closer to the event. There will be other areas in which we need assistance.

Currently we have 4 boys earning their Arrow of Light Award: Jabari, Jason, Jason, and Ryan. We would like Arya and Chris to earn their Webelos badge by that date. Both boys would need to complete any remaining requirements at home and demonstrate their progress at one of the next 2 den meetings.

I have started working on the arrow of light plaques. The wood has been cut and next will be sanded, stained and prepared for the awards to be attached. We will possibly have the 4 boys assemble them during the last den meeting, or perhaps we will meet at my home on a weekend afternoon. I have the name of the man who has made the arrows in the past, and will contact him this week. The plaques will be presented to the boys during the ceremony.

IMPORTANT (ALL SCOUTS): at the next den meeting we will go through the Webelos book to get a complete list on each scout’s achievements. It will be then your responsibility to check what awards they have received. We will compile 1 final list of awards that will be purchased at the scout store prior to the bridging. This is their final opportunity to receive any cub scout awards. Once they bridge and it is recorded at council, they are no longer allowed to earn cub scout awards.

We sincerely hope that each scout has enjoyed their time in the pack and are excited about moving up into Boy Scouts!
