Special Den Meeting on 10-15-09 for Chuckwagon Camping Trip

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Hey everyone,

It was great to see several new faces at the meeting tonight. As discussed with everyone tonight, we need to have a meeting next Thursday for those boys who are going on the Campout October 23-25. During next week’s meeting we will organize all of the boys who are going into their dens for the event (mixing all of the dens together). Once we do that, the dens will work on a den name and decorate a flag for the dens for the Chuck Wagon Derby and then begin work on their Chuck Wagons. We will meet again from 6:45 until 8:00 or so to get as much as we can done and then we will work on finishing them up the following Thursday, October 22. We just didn’t feel we’d have enough time to work on them the day before having to go out to the campout event.

I do need one parent volunteer to coordinate getting the food for the weekend. The Pack will provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning and dinner on Saturday night. Everyone will be on their own for dinner on Friday night and are asked to pack a bag lunch for Saturday afternoon “on the trail”.

Also, with all of the new faces and several new leaders of dens, I am looking to schedule a parent meeting in early November to try to fill out some roles that we need to get coordinated and put people in charge of, so be looking for details on that for early November.

Thanks everyone and we’ll see you next Thursday.

Randy

Bear Cubs - Achievement Update 07-23-09

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Parents,
Our trip to InsideOut Sports in Cary worked out great. We put a lot of tasks in the books for Achievement 14 in the Bear Cub Handbook and the scouts have successfully earned their Bicycling Sports Belt Loop. They are now just a few steps away from earning their pin.

To complete the Bicycling Sports Pin, they need 10 hours of bicycling (a chart listing each hour completed) along with any four of the following tasks:

  • Participate in a group bike rodeo - COMPLETED Last Night
  • Demonstrate how to repair a flat tire - COMPLETED Last Night
  • Create a poster of early bikes
  • Show use of safety equipment
  • Register bicycle
  • Go on a group bicycle hike - Bike Ride in August Scheduled
  • Restore non-functioning bike
  • Visit bike race or exhibit
  • Set up rodeo or competition

Don’t forget that on Saturday August 8th we have our Pack Bike Safety Ride from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Thanks,
Juan

NEW Bear Cubs - Achievement Update 06-11-09

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Wolf Parents,

At the Lake Crabtree pack meeting, we completed Bear Cub achievement 5d (visit a nature center).
For last night’s meeting we worked on Bear Cub achievement 7a using plaster of Paris and a finger printing sheet from Creative Chemistry
http://www.creative-chemistry.org.uk/activities/fingerprinting.htm

Using the secret code provided, the scouts have to encrypt a short joke for me to decode at our next meeting.

I have attached the achievement and elective sheets I use to track each scout.

The biggest part of the year will be the Bear Den scrapbook for the year. Every den meeting, each scout will provide a sheet identifying what they did for the time between pack activities (pictures, stories, drawings, etc.). My hope is that at the end of the year, I will have a 3 inch binder full of memories.

Thanks,
Juan

Wolf Cub Achievement Update 05-14-09

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Wolf Parents,

First Announcement – I WAS WRONG [Elias was right] – there is sunblock rated 85-90 SPF (must feel like glue). I owe him an ice cream cone.

Second Announcement - I would like to welcome Nikolas (and his father Bryan) into the Wolf Den. Nikolas, Ronnie, and Elias are classmates together in school. Kudos to Ethan and Elias for showing him the ropes.

Be sure to get your scout ready for Bears because we will officially transition in the Bear Den next month. Last night we covered achievement 12B from the BEAR handbook.

I have a few more activities for the scouts to complete while I gather the pieces for our Crystal Radio Project. The scouts will build a small radio powered only by radio waves (Bear Elective 3). I will base our radio off of ScienceWiz’s Inventions Kit I bought at Target for $24.
ScienceWiz Crystal Radio Set

I could use your help if you know of any HAM radio operators to help me obtain:

  • A pack of Schottky diodes
  • Ceramic Earphones
  • 1 inch paper fasteners

I will check Radio Shack for the 28 gauge magnet wire and other supplies.

Here was our secret decoder

Wolf Cub Achievement Update 4-23-09

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Wolf Parents,

I brought the American Flag and a print-out of the North Carolina State Flag and we worked on completing Achievement 2 in our Wolf Handbook.  On the Pack 393 YouTube page, I put a favorite video showing how to fold the American Flag.

I could not find a good link showing how to make a paper football but maybe we can post a video one day for the Pack.

http://www.YouTube.com/Pack393

Ask your son if he can remember some facts about the flag.

We also completed Elective 1A (Secret Message).
Decode this joke (hint: 1=A, 5=E, 9=I, 15=O, 21=U, 25=Y)
23-8-1-20 4-9-4 20-8-5 19-21-19-8-9 19-1-25 20-15 20-8-5 2-5-5? “23-1-19-1-2-9!”

Thanks,
Juan
