Den Meeting Tonight! - New Scouts, Webelos, Yorktown, and Popcorn

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Hey everyone,

We do have a regular den meeting tomorrow. I had a call from a family that has a Tiger and a Bear that will be coming to visit. They just moved to the area from France and the boys (and parents) are still learning to speak English (the mom, Claire, speaks English pretty well, I talked to her on the phone). So, be on the lookout for them and please make them feel Welcome.

The Webelos II boys will not be meeting at the building tomorrow night as we will be going to the Fire Station to work on our Readyman pin, so we won’t see you there. That means that I need a den leader to volunteer to run the opening activity (Flag ceremony, etiquette or maybe a surprise uniform inspection - but nothing too harsh). Please email me to let me know you can organize this.

Also, we have to get the final registration for the Yorktown trip and we need the payments made (I’ve got to get mine to Bobbi following tomorrow night), so if a parent can let me know that they will be able to step over to the Boy Scout meeting to get the envelop with the registration form from my son and can make sure all of the den’s get a chance to get registered, that would be great. We are at 38 with the Flack family if all of them go and I haven’t gotten them on the form yet. We have slots for 50. Remember that it is $76 per scout and the same for each adult ($152 per pair) and make your checks out to Pack 393 so that we can get it deposited before I have to cut a check from our account to make the final payment. As discussed, if your son sells $260 in popcorn (several got close with the show and sells the weekend before last), then the Pack will reimburse you for the scout admission for this trip once the popcorn sale is complete.

And that brings me to the Popcorn update. I hope all of the boys are having a good time selling and that they have gotten to go out in their neighborhoods. We basically have 2 more weeks from tomorrow to complete our sale.

All orders and money have to be turned in at our meeting on October 25.

As we said at the sale kickoff, you have to have the money for each order or the parent will need to write a check to cover the cost of the order or the order won’t get made. Hopefully you have been collecting the money in advance as you went out to sell. We also ask that the parent write a check for any cash that your have received (in other words, deposit the cash and write a check for the cash amount to turn in with your order on the final night). We will need some parent volunteers to help with each den collection on the 25th and to make sure the orders are correct and the money is correct, but it would be better for us not to have to handle any cash and writing a check for the cash amount is the best way to ensure this. Thanks for your help with this and continued good luck with your sale.

Sincerely,

Randy Basinger
Cubmaster

Registration help needed during Pinewood Derby

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Hello Everyone,

Recently, Randy has asked for a volunteer to help with the registration/recharter process for the upcoming year, and unfortunately, I have not had any takers. We are out of town this weekend for the Derby, and typically, I would verify scout/leader info as well as collect payment for the upcoming scout year at this time. The Derby is a great place to do this, as most scouts are present!!

To re-cap, I am looking for someone to set up a table, verify current scout/leader information (from a roster which I will provide) and collect payment for the 2011 scout year. Also, if there are any new registration forms, they can be collected at this time. I can provide a quick training (even over the phone) and provide all the information you need.

I would greatly appreciate support in this regard. Please email me by tonight if you are able to help.

Thanks.
Jeanne Repage

Building a trail in North Carolina

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

linky with video - http://boyslife.org/video-audio/14510/building-a-trail-in-north-carolina/

The partially completed Mountains-to-Sea Trail in North Carolina will eventually stretch 930 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains. Over the past 25 years, Scouts and many other volunteers have worked to mark and clear different sections of the trail. They’ve finished about half of it, but trail-building will be needed for many years to come.

Watch as North Carolina Scouts fend off ticks, poison ivy and some thick vegetation to help clear a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. To learn more about the project, see the “Trail Builders” article in the August 2010 issue of Boys’ Life magazine.
