Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade details

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

All,

Here are the details for this Saturday.

Tim is going to bring the trailer to the Lowe’s parking lot at 10 a.m. (This is the Lowe’s at Maynard and NC54 near downtown Cary). We will decorate the trailer and many of the boys will be able to ride in the “float”. Following the decorating, we will be free to grab lunch separately or together. Then we have to have our float over at Martin Architectural: 511 East Chatham Street. We need to have our float in line at 1 p.m. and all of the boys who are riding or walking need to be at our location in the line no later than 1:15. This location is near the start of the parade route which goes into downtown Cary and turns and goes by the Cary Elementary (which is where you will need to pick up your boys). As many of the parents who can join us are welcome, but know that many will be walking.

Also note that they are saying the high for Saturday right now is going to be 39 degrees and there is even talk of a chance of a cold rain or snow (which will make it feel like Christmas). This will be the coldest we’ve ever had during a parade, so make sure your scouts are bundled up warmly. Especially if they are riding in the trailer. We won’t be going fast enough to get wind chill, but it sure sounds like it is going to be cold. Keep a watch on the local weather and plan accordingly.

A few notes for parade day:

  • East Cedar, East Chatham, and South Academy Streets will close at 1:00 p.m. through the end of the parade.
  • At the end of the parade pick up all Walkers, Riders, etc. at Cary Elementary.
  • No Parking along the parade route.
  • Parking is limited in the area, so carpooling is encouraged.
  • If your group has a vehicle and walkers, the vehicle will line up on East Cedar Street, and the walkers must line up in Urban Park. They will be brought together at the beginning of the parade. (Note that I plan to keep all of ours together, but they may make our walkers go to Urban Park. If this is the case, I’m going to ask that the Boy Scouts volunteer to be our “walkers” in Urban Park and they can then pick up with us all on the route)
  • As your group reaches the end of the parade, please move onto the sidewalks behind the other parade watchers and stay out of the street. It is a safety hazard if people are in the street while the parade is running.

It should be a lot of fun. Not sure if anyone wants to volunteer to have hot chocolate or cider for the boys once they get done, but it might not be a bad idea given the current weather schedule. I’ll follow up with our exact location in the line so people know the spot to look for.

Thanks, and I’ll see many of you on Thursday night at our meeting.
Randy

P.S. Don’t forget to bring $5 for your derby car kit. I will have them there at the meeting.

Pack Meeting Wrap Up 12-4-09

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Hey everyone,

I thought our first Pack meeting in a while went really well. I’m looking forward to having boys help with the flag ceremonies and learning about that. I also want to say a big thanks to Kelly for organizing our food and funds service event this weekend. The boys did great making up the bags and who won’t want to give some food or money to the boy scouts to help these families? It will be fun to see the success and I hope many can go to actually give the food and money to the families.

Just a couple of reminders:

1) We have our only meeting in December next Thursday. We will be bringing our food and money back to Kelly next week and I’m sure she will send out a reminder email later to let you know.

2) The following Saturday, December 12, is the Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade. We will be decorating a trailer in the Lowes parking lot (the one off Maynard and NC 54) at 10 a.m. and then we’ll all grab some lunch (or you can bring a bag lunch) and then we’ll meet at the rendezvous point around 12:30-1:00 to spread Christmas cheer from our float/trailer. If anyone has any decorations that they would be willing to donate, please let me know. One year we had an inflatable polar bear coming out of a cardboard chimney, which was pretty impressive. This is always a lot of fun and I’ll send out a final email with all the logistics once I get the information from the Jaycees.

3) Lastly, next Thursday we will be selling the pinewood derby car kits for the boys (Yes, race time is just around the corner). With this being our last meeting of the year, I wanted to go ahead and get the car kits out. They cost $4 or $5 per kit, so come prepared to pick yours up. I know that Brian, our Pinewood Derby race engineer, is working on scheduling at least one car building day in early January, but don’t wait until then to get your kits.

Thanks everyone for chipping in and helping with things tonight.

Yours in Scouting,
Randy

Pack Meeting Thursday

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Hey everyone,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. I want to remind everyone that this Thursday we will have a Pack meeting. Vivek, if you could remember to bring the pins and loops and patches and parents, if you could let your Den leaders know what loops and such your son’s have earned. This meeting will be from 7-8 p.m. and we will have some details on our planned food drive that we will be working on during this time.

This activity will be followed by a flag ceremony, a game and any awards that the boys have won this fall. If you haven’t gotten through things just yet, don’t worry, there will be another opportunity for a Pack meeting in the not to distant future.

I look forward to seeing you and all the boys at the meeting on Thursday.

Yours in Scouting,

Randy

P.S. I haven’t heard the details on the Cary Christmas Parade yet, but expect to hear something soon. Once I get those details, I’ll get them out to you. What I do know is that it will be on Saturday, December 12 and we will be participating as both a Pack and Troop. Keep watching your email for more details.

Parent Leader Meeting - Upcoming Events

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Parents and leaders,

Thanks for attending the meeting tonight. I feel great about the volunteers that we had and encourage everyone to participate with the upcoming events as we have a lot of great events planned. As a reminder, here are the committees that we have and that need support:

  1. Recruitment/Registration/Retention: Jeannie Repage (Chair)
  2. Fundraising (popcorn): Leopolda Ramos (and everyone give her congrats for all of her efforts to coordinate this event for our Pack – it is a lot of work and she handled it well)
  3. Blue and Gold: Thanks to Marilyn Adams for volunteering to chair this committee – she won’t be able to do it alone so consider volunteering to help support her for this once a year but important event. It is just around the corner on February 21.
  4. Pinewood Derby: Brian Flack (Chair) and Rudy Rowell is the only other member. They can’t do this alone, so please help volunteering to help with this event coming up in January. We need to start planning to have some derby car building activities in December and early January so that every boy is ready to race.
  5. Communications and Social Committee: Juan Ramos (Chair)
  6. Camping Committee: (needing a chair), Vivek and I are the only BALOO trained members of the Pack who can take us camping, and Bobbi is going to send out details on the upcoming training that will offer this key training for us. We need a couple of others to get trained so we have plenty who can officially take us out into the woods.
  7. Cubmaster: Randy Basinger
  8. Assistant Cubmaster: Open slot. I would love to have someone to assist me in this role.
  9. Pack Trainer: Bobbi Stanley
  10. Treasurer: Bobbi Stanley
  11. Tiger Den: Brian Flack, Leader
  12. Wolf Den: Neil Donovan, Leader
  13. Bear Den: Juan Ramos, Leader
  14. Webelos I: Kelly Coman and Al Sullivan, Leaders
  15. Webelos II: Titus Taylor and Ron Repage, Leaders

We need some assistants for the younger dens, so please consider helping these folks out in these roles.

As I mentioned, think about it through this month and let me know how you would like to help the Pack at our planned pack meeting in December.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Boy Scout Troop is moving their meeting night to Tuesdays starting in January and it was discussed that we need to move the Cub Scout meeting night to coincide with the Boy Scouts for many reasons. So the plan is that starting with our first meeting in January we will go to the second and fourth Tuesdays each month.

That means our first meeting in January will be on Tuesday, January 12th.

Please mark your calendars for this change and also let me know if this creates any hardship for you. We want all of the boys to be able to participate in Scouting and I want to work with you, so let me know.

UPCOMING EVENTS through the end of the year:
Den Meetings on Thursday, Nov. 12
No meeting on Thursday, Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving)

Pack Meeting on Thursday, December 3 (we are going to start having Pack meetings every other month on the first Tuesday of the month)

Den Meeting on Thursday, December 10 (this will be the final meeting of the year due to Christmas holidays)

Cary Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 12 (more details on this to come, but I’ve talked with the Boy Scout Troop and I believe our Troop and Pack will be walking in this together, we’re even talking about doing a float again, so keep watching your email for details, but save the date. This is always fun for the boys.)

Lastly, Kelly Coman is going to be providing details on a community service food drive that we did last year and will be doing again this year, so watch for her email and there will be further details at the December 3 Pack meeting.

In the Future: There are plans to go to the next Scout Night with the Carolina Hurricanes (this should fulfill one of the Tiger’s Go-See-Its). Watch for emails on the details as we need to buy tickets by December 30. The game itself is the Hurricanes against the Avs and it is Friday January 8.

There are a whole bunch of other fun events upcoming. Thanks for all who are already volunteering and I am excited about the future of Pack 393.

Yours in Scouting,

Randy
