Pinewood derby this Saturday at 10:30

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

All,

The rescheduled Pinewood Derby is this Saturday at the church, starting at 10:30. We’ll do quick introductions and should be on the track by 10:45. The racing groups are as follows (in order):

Tigers
Cubs (Wolves & Bears together)
Webelos
Championship (race-off of winners from 3 race groups above)
Outlaw race

The top 3 fastest cars from each group (Tiger, Cub, Webelos) will then participate in a pack race-off for bragging rights and serious hardware. If all goes smoothly, the event should last about 2 hours.

The 3 fastest cars, plus best design and most unique from each group (Tiger, Cub, Webelos) will be recognized and advance to the Crosswinds District Race the following Saturday, March 6. For the district race, a car can enter for speed OR a design award, but not both. Those scouts recognized for both speed and design at the Pack 393 race must choose one category in which to compete. Registration for the district race has to be completed by Monday, March 1st,.

Racing Rules:
1. Within a racing group (Tiger, Cub, Webelos, Championship), each car will race four times, one on each of the 4 track lanes. The total added time from those 4 runs will determine the place within the group.
2. The fastest three cars from each group will then race in the Pack Championship. In the championship, each car will have another 4 runs, the same as before. The total added time from those 4 runs will determine the overall championship place; plus serious hardware and bragging rights.
3. If during the race the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make a repair or the car is disqualified.
4. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time, but without the disqualified car.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Brian

Scout Sunday is February 7th @ Triangle Church

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Hello Scouts and Families,

You are invited to join us for Sunday Services at Triangle Church (Sunday School at 10 a.m. to 10:40 and Church from about 10:50 to 11:45 a.m.) as this Sunday, February 7 is Scout Sunday and the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts in America. If you can attend, please have the boys wear their Class A full uniform (hats, scarves and blue or tan shirts). I am not sure if some of our scouts or leaders will be doing anything as a part of the service, but we’ll look to try to all sit together, if possible.

Wendy and I teach the 3rd grade class on Sunday mornings, but I’ll see if someone can look out for those visiting with us on Sunday.

Hope to see you there and have a great week.

Pinewood Derby postponed until last weekend in February

Friday, January 29th, 2010

All,

Due to the impending inclement weather (and as one email pointed out that the pinewood derby cars don’t have snow tires), we have decided to postpone the pinewood derby until the last weekend in February. We wish it wasn’t the case, but given the amount of set-up and tear down and the predictions on the amount of wintry weather we are expecting, the Pinewood Derby guru and the Cubmaster both feel this is the prudent move so that we don’t have people making a trek in bad weather and/or being able to make it to the Church building and then it getting worse as they are saying the weather is going to go on most of Saturday.

The new date for the event will be Saturday, February 27 with set-up on Friday, February 26.

Thanks for your understanding and enjoy the winter wonderland with your families. Now it is free to snow a foot on Saturday so we can get some good sledding in.

Yours in Scouting,

Randy

Happy New Year - Meetings Change to Tuesday nights - same time 6:45

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

All,

Hope everyone enjoyed a great holiday and has had a good start to the New Year.

Just a reminder that our meetings now shift to the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at the East Triangle Building starting at 6:45 p.m.

The first Tuesday meeting will be next Tuesday, Jan. 12.

I am going to be away on business that night, but will work out to make sure the building is open (it should be since the Scout Troop meets on this night as well, but I’ll follow-up with Rudy to make sure).

Have a great meeting and as a reminder – we have our leaders meeting this Thursday at 7 p.m. and any parent is welcome to join us. We’ll be discussing the upcoming Pinewood Derby (end of January) and the Blue and Gold Banquet (late February).

Yours in Scouting,

Randy

Cary Christmas Parade - Final

Friday, December 11th, 2009

All,

Here are the final details for the Parade.

Decorating in the Lowe’s parking lot at 10 a.m. (the Lowe’s off Maynard and NC 54). We should be done with decorating by around 11:30 to give folks time to get some lunch before meeting at Martin Architectural Company (511 E. Chatham St.) at 1 p.m. They ask that all riders be there by 1 p.m., but note that the parade won’t start until 2 p.m. and we will probably move out around 2:30. No personal cars are allowed in the Martin Architectural lot, so I’ve been suggesting that folks park in the back parking lot of Cary Elementary (where the parade will end ) or at the Baptist Church right there near the end of the route and walk over (about a mile) to Martin Architectural. Trust me, after having done this a few times, once you get done with the parade you want to have a short walk to your car. They also suggest carpooling where someone parks at the end and then carries others over to the start. That can work too. I will have my truck, but likely all four of my kids with me.

We are in slot 78 of 114 for the parade.

A little smaller than in year’s past, so the Parade should go a little faster than in the past. They’ve have over 200 entrants in the past.

It looks like the weather is going to cooperate with the forecast temperature a few degrees warmer than earlier in the week and the rain is supposed to hold off until Saturday evening or Sunday. It is still going to be chilly at 45-50 degrees, so dress appropriately. We don’t necessarily have to have our uniforms showing, but if you do – great and have layers underneath. If you have a Santa hat or festive items that you can wear, all the better. We will have our Pack sign on the trailer, so they will know who we are without our uniforms.

I look forward to seeing you out there and I talked to several folks, but if you could respond to this email to let me know that you are coming so we can begin to get a headcount and know who we are looking for. I think there will be plenty of room for everyone to ride on the “float”.

Holiday Service Project 2009

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Pack 393,

Our pack has a wonderful opportunity to help serve our community. In light of the recent economic changes for many people, we have decided to team up with The Carying Place to provide some desperately needed assistance this holiday season. The Carying Place provides transitional housing for seven homeless, working families for 16 weeks.

So here’s what we are going to do….

We have planned a food/cash donation drive. In the past we have canvassed the Breckenridge neighborhood. This year we will distribute the bags individually within our own neighborhoods. Our goal is to collect $350 which will provide each family with a $25 grocery card and a $25 gas card in addition to the food. Last year we were also able to include a $50.00 Target gift card!

I would like each pack family to consider donating as well. This would be an excellent time to talk to your boys about compassion and to teach them that we all need to help others.

Ideas to consider:
1. Have your scout donate some of their own money. (there’s no better way to teach kids to serve then by giving their own money)
2. Make a list of chores that they could do to earn money to help these kids.
3. Have them talk to friends/family/neighbors about our project and ask for a donation.
4. Search through your pantry and pick out food that they like to eat and have them donate it instead.
5. Set a goal of how much you would like to raise
6. Be an example: donate and participate in the project!

Thursday, December 3th at 7:00pm: Meet at Triangle Church for Pack meeting.

As a pack, we will assemble the bags for distribution. Please bring a stapler and an estimate of the number of bags your son will need. You may canvass just your personal street or branch out to other streets as well. I would like to see each scout distributes 25 bags.

Friday, December 4th: Distribute bags in neighborhoods
Sunday, December 6th 4:00 PM: Collect envelopes and bags.
Thursday, December 10th: Bring food and money to den meeting at Triangle Church.
Thursday, December 17th 6:00pm: Deliver gifts and food to The Carying Place.

So here’s what we need from you:

1. Talk to your boys about our project. Get them excited and have them participate!! They will experience the joy of knowing that they made a difference in someone’s life!!
2. Donate and participate yourself.
3. Ask for donations when you are out in the community. Many local stores and restaurants will generously donate gift cards.

Those who participated in the delivering of the gifts and food last year know the incredible experience the boys had. They were proud of what they achieved and realized that they made a tremendous impact on these families. I hope you will consider all that we have to be thankful for and help make this year even better than last!

Kelly Coman

Popcorn Pickup details and Pack meeting plans

Friday, November 13th, 2009

All,

It is that time.

The Popcorn pickup is this weekend.

You can plan to pick up your popcorn on Saturday or Sunday from 12-4 p.m. in the Twin Lakes Subdivision at 340 New Milford Rd., Cary 27519. Twin Lakes is near Davis Drive and McCrimmon Corners Shopping plaza in Morrisville.

If you can give Andrea Wright a call to set up a pick up time for your son’s popcorn. It is important that we pick up the orders and deliver them this week as we had promised our customers that their orders would be in this before Thanksgiving. Let’s not disappoint them. Great job on the sale everyone and lets support Leopolda and Andrea and make their jobs easy this weekend.

Also, just a reminder that we will be having a Pack meeting on December 3 at 7 p.m. at the Triangle Church building. There will be more details out about this soon, but we want to take this opportunity to recognize any of the achievements that the boys have earned/completed this summer and fall. Please let your den leader know what achievements and belt loops your son has completed soon and I ask that the Den leaders make sure that Vivek gets details about whatever awards you have for your boys no later than next Friday, November 20.

Talk to you all soon and remember that there will be no meeting in two weeks on November 26 due to the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Randy
