ONLY FOR WEBELOS II PARENTS BRIDGING TO TROOP 393

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Note the information below regarding the Troop and a meeting about their summer camp information, medical forms, etc. If your son has bridged into this Troop, I encourage you to attend as there is still time for them to join the Troop at camp and help your son get well down the road to earning his Eagle. Camp is a great way for them to earn a number of merit badges in a short time.

If you have any questions about it, you can email me directly or if you can’t attend, but are interested in your boy going to camp with the Troop, let me know as I’ll be there on Tuesday night.

Just a note, as of this Tuesday night (even though the Webelos II will be racing in the Pinewood Derby with us), they should be attending their new Troop selection. There will not be a meeting of the Webelos II this Tuesday night and there will not be a Webelos II den with Pack 393 until we bridge up the Webelos I in May.

Blue and Gold - Recap

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

All,

I had a great time at the Blue and Gold and enjoyed seeing the Webelos II bridge over into Boy Scouting. I want to send a special thanks again to Marilyn and Brian Adams, who are new to the Pack and I thought did a great job (with help from some vets) of decorating and making the day special for the boys. My sons (and daughters) had a great time.

Just a couple of reminders:

We do have den meetings this Tuesday night at 6:45 at the building. We then have the Pinewood Derby coming up on Saturday and I’m sure Brian will be getting more details out about that in the next couple of days.

Following that, we will have our representatives to the District Pinewood Derby racing at the District event on March 6th (the following weekend, hard to believe it is already March). Also that first week of March, we have a Pack meeting on Tuesday, March 2 so be sure to get your Den leaders any achievements and belt loops that your son has earned this coming Tuesday so that he/she can let Vivek know for the awards at the Pack meeting.

Finally, there will be a committee meeting on Thursday, March 4 and all leaders and any parents are invited to be there. This will be an important one as we plan out the rest of the spring and make plans for the other den bridging. So leaders, please come prepared to provide an update on where the boys are and if there is anything that we need to do to get the boys ready to move on to their new dens by the end of May.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Pinewood Derby next Saturday. Also note that we will be re-chartering the Pack at the Pinewood Derby, so please plan to sign your boy up for another great year of scouting.

Have a great start to the week and I’ll see many of you on Tuesday night.

Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade details

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

All,

Here are the details for this Saturday.

Tim is going to bring the trailer to the Lowe’s parking lot at 10 a.m. (This is the Lowe’s at Maynard and NC54 near downtown Cary). We will decorate the trailer and many of the boys will be able to ride in the “float”. Following the decorating, we will be free to grab lunch separately or together. Then we have to have our float over at Martin Architectural: 511 East Chatham Street. We need to have our float in line at 1 p.m. and all of the boys who are riding or walking need to be at our location in the line no later than 1:15. This location is near the start of the parade route which goes into downtown Cary and turns and goes by the Cary Elementary (which is where you will need to pick up your boys). As many of the parents who can join us are welcome, but know that many will be walking.

Also note that they are saying the high for Saturday right now is going to be 39 degrees and there is even talk of a chance of a cold rain or snow (which will make it feel like Christmas). This will be the coldest we’ve ever had during a parade, so make sure your scouts are bundled up warmly. Especially if they are riding in the trailer. We won’t be going fast enough to get wind chill, but it sure sounds like it is going to be cold. Keep a watch on the local weather and plan accordingly.

A few notes for parade day:

  • East Cedar, East Chatham, and South Academy Streets will close at 1:00 p.m. through the end of the parade.
  • At the end of the parade pick up all Walkers, Riders, etc. at Cary Elementary.
  • No Parking along the parade route.
  • Parking is limited in the area, so carpooling is encouraged.
  • If your group has a vehicle and walkers, the vehicle will line up on East Cedar Street, and the walkers must line up in Urban Park. They will be brought together at the beginning of the parade. (Note that I plan to keep all of ours together, but they may make our walkers go to Urban Park. If this is the case, I’m going to ask that the Boy Scouts volunteer to be our “walkers” in Urban Park and they can then pick up with us all on the route)
  • As your group reaches the end of the parade, please move onto the sidewalks behind the other parade watchers and stay out of the street. It is a safety hazard if people are in the street while the parade is running.

It should be a lot of fun. Not sure if anyone wants to volunteer to have hot chocolate or cider for the boys once they get done, but it might not be a bad idea given the current weather schedule. I’ll follow up with our exact location in the line so people know the spot to look for.

Thanks, and I’ll see many of you on Thursday night at our meeting.
Randy

P.S. Don’t forget to bring $5 for your derby car kit. I will have them there at the meeting.

Combined Leader and Parent meeting tonight

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Parents and Leaders,

Just a reminder that we will have a combined leaders and parent meeting tonight to get organized for the rest of the year. This is an important meeting so I have asked that a representative from each family with a boy in the pack attend this meeting.

The meeting is at the Triangle Church building from 7-8 p.m. I plan to go no longer than an hour tonight.

See you all there.

Campout and Derby Details 10-23-09

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Hey Parents and kids,

Wow, hard to believe that tomorrow night many of us will be under the stars and enjoying smores.
Pack 393 is staying in Poplar A (you will see it on the map attached).

Bathrooms and Showers:

All campsites have flush toilets and showers available. My advice having been at Durant for Summer camp in Red Oak is to reserve one bathroom and one shower for adults only. This will help to keep the toilets and showers clean for adults and teach some responsibility to the Webelos.

Remember a scout is clean. (Borrowing the 10th point of the scout law)

Logistically for Friday night:

Maps are available online at www.campdurant.com. The camp address, for those with GPS or want to Google Map it is

4637 Old Carthage Rd.
Carthage, NC 28327.

Those who are camping Friday night should plan to head down to the camp and once you arrive I am sure there will be someone to direct you to Poplar A. It takes about 1 and a half hours to get there from most points in the Triangle, so plan accordingly. It gets dark shortly after 7 these days.

Vivek will be in charge for those on Friday night and will hand them off to Juan for Saturday night.

Parking:

Council office has approved us to park all vehicles on the side of the roads at Durant. Only utilize one side of the road and pull off the road as much as possible.

One important note, We can NOT have ANY Vehicles in any campsites. They must be on the road. Only Trailers can be parked in campsites. Be very careful when backing up trailers as there are lots of places to get “Stuck” in some campsites (i.e. Large Holes, ditches, etc.)

So, each person (scout, adult and sibling) should have a bag lunch packed and brought to carry in the chuck wagons along with the materials that are needed. I need to ask all the Wolves to bring their books as we need at least two (I’ve got one from last year) to carry in the wagons. The rest of the materials I will bring with me on Saturday morning. Also, we need a parent or two to plan to come back to our campsite to start the charcoal fires for the hobo pack meals Saturday night as we only have an hour and 15 minutes slated to put this together. It would probably be good for a couple of parents to head back during the award ceremony to being having things prepared as an assembly line for the meal prep.

They also note that a couple of the events are “messy” and “wet” and the boys should each pack an extra pair of clothes in a plastic bag to change into in case they do get messy. Also note that there is a good chance of rain on Saturday, so prepare with ponchos and rain gear as the event won’t be canceled for bad weather.

All, this will be a grand adventure. I look forward to seeing the boys (and the rest) have a bunch of fun and make memories for us all.

See you out there on Saturday,
Randy

Chuck Wagon Derby Prep Night 10-15-09

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Hey everyone,

I thought the boys did a great job putting together their “Chuck Wagons”. Leaders, I will follow up with details for what needs to go in the wagons. We still need to finish up the flags and attach them to the wagons and Brian Adams is going to bring our final wagon to the meeting next week where we will finish up the remaining tasks and have all the boys help build and decorate that one. These things look great. So good that I think we’ll plan on a Pack 393 Chuck Wagon parade with the combined dens next Thursday.

For all of those planning to go down to the camp on Friday to spend the night the first night, we will need to meet and make sure that we have all of the equipment that you will need for the trip. As a reminder, I can’t go on Friday night, but Vivek will be going and can coordinate the camping from a Baloo training standpoint. I don’t know if there is anyone else with a trailer hitch to pull the trailer out to the camp or if we just need to coordinate someone taking a couple of tables and the stove down. If not, we can plan meals around campfire cooking.

We’ll need to get a final head count as we had several new boys register tonight and several of whom want to attend the campout, so I’ll need to work with Bobbi and coordinate what needs to be done to register them. I think it should be fine, but will need to coordinate with her once she returns from her trip. The final head count will help me in buying the food for Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast on Friday (would also welcome a volunteer to help me with this) and then we’ll need to work out getting it transported with the Pack group that goes down Friday night. So plan on staying a few extra minutes on Thursday night to make sure we have everything coordinated for what should be a fun Pack 393 adventure at the Cub Scout Chuck Wagon Derby.

Thanks to all the parents and leaders who jumped right in a helped the boys build their wagons tonight. I hope you had as much fun as I did.

2009 Planning Meeting this Thursday June 4th

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

To All Scout Parents

The 2009 Cub Pack 393 Planning Meeting will be on Thursday, June 4 from 7-9 at the Triangle Church building.

Please plan on being there early as we’ll make formal plans for the full year and schedule in dates and make our campout plans so that we can let everyone know the planned dates.

In preparation, I ask that everyone think about the following questions and come with comments, suggestions and input:

  1. What do you like about our Pack? Along those same lines, what is your favorite Pack event and why?
  2. What is working in our Pack?
  3. What do you think we need to do differently or better?
  4. What would you change about our Pack?
  5. What can I do to improve the Pack this year and how can I get someone else involved with that activity to help them be more involved with the Pack?

Thanks, I’m sure there are other questions that will spin off of these. I want to spend some time talking about this area first (15-20 minutes or so) and then do some planning hopefully implementing some of the things we discuss here.

Look forward to a great meeting with you all Thursday, June 4.

Randy
